  The mood of the poem changes from the joy and excitement of the surfer to the caution of the day ending and the dangerous atmosphere of the sea at night, “For on the sand the grey-wolf sea lies, snarling,” The structure of the poem is a three stanza free verse. This best conveys the change in mood.

  Judith Arundell Wright (– 25 June ) was an Australian poet, environmentalist and campaigner for Aboriginal land rights. Judith Wright was born in Armidale, New South Wales. The eldest child of Phillip Wright and his first wife, Ethel, she spent most of her formative years in Brisbane and Sydney. Wright was of Cornish ancestry.

  Wright uses these scenes to accurately describe the harmful and often damaging effects of the unpredictable environment. This is seen throughout the poem, especially in the second and third stanzas, when the poet writes ‘the scoured ruined land’, describing the state of the land and relating the reader with the poet’s connection to the land.
